This is Denise’s Story
Denise rushed to her doctor after finding out that her partner was HIV positive. He had been sleeping with men behind her back for 6 years. Denise ended the 6-year long relationship which came with normal relationship challenges and feelings of depression, post-break up loneliness, etc. But distracted by the fear of receiving a positive diagnosis, she couldn’t afford to “miss” him. What would her life look like if they came back positive?
She wasn’t showing any symptoms, but had a gut feeling about this and it wasn’t good. Denise said her CD4 count was still at a safe level, but unfortunately she ended up being HIV positive. She had only been infected for about 2-3 months.
An HIV Positive Diagnosis
Sinking into a depression about her status, she turned to social media. She had heard about magic Johnson, a high profile ex-basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers who was HIV positive and still able to live a normal life.
So she watched countless hours of videos and interviews, using this as a form of healing and motivation moving forward. She says that being open about her HIV positive diagnosis is really important to her. She volunteers for a clinical trials and blogs about her experiences. She eats healthier than ever before and exercises daily, abstains from stress and taking prescription medication. She says she doesn’t feel any different physically, but having HIV has been a wake-up call for her. “It’s a major identity shift and makes you more responsible person.” She feels a sense of urgency around living life to the fullest, and doesn’t want to waste any more time being ungrateful or unhappy.
